The 2024 Presidential election is unique among recent ones in that both the popular vote and Electoral College results favored the same candidate. I hope this puts to rest calls to eliminate the Electoral College.
The Presidential election system of the American Republic is built on the foundation of the Electoral College. For our entire history, the Electoral College has safeguarded the voting results for President. Rural voters and less populated areas still have a voice in selecting our President. The Electoral College protects against Presidential elections being controlled by a few population centers. I believe our founders were prescient and/or divinely guided when they protected our country from the tyranny of the majority against the minority when choosing our chief executive. Election of House and Senate members protect the majority. Our system of government is a brilliant and an effective one. Although we have had difficulties, including a Civil War our framework has allowed us to survive and thrive for 250 years.
Another stressful Presidential election is over. Many American voters are excited about the next four years while many are wallowing in self-pity as they try and perform a postmortem on their failed campaign. Finger pointing has started, and the blame game is being played by Harris supporters looking much like a circular firing squad. For her part Kamala initially responded like a jilted lover after a bad break up -who encourages her friends to hate and let her ex know how bad he is. President Biden, on the other hand, is reacting like a statesman seeking reconciliation after losing a hard-fought campaign. At this point, my opinion of Biden has increased as he has extended his hand in peace inviting President-elect Trump to the White House. While the jury is still out regarding President Biden’s motivation for such an action, I choose to think positive. I believe he is putting our country before the party.
It is time to heal…it is time for Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Liberals and Conservatives to put all the campaign vitriol behind them and work together to solve our nation’s problems. It is critical for our elected officials and campaign surrogates to clarify to their supporters that hat was said in the heat of the election season was just campaign rhetoric. Harris is not dumb and Trump is not Hitler.
With this in mind, I think we are at a time in our history when the prospects are good for a rebirth of the American Republic. Our elected officials should consider themselves as stewards of the Constitution and fiduciaries of the peoples’ will:
Put the needs of our citizens first over those who have entered our country illegally. In fact, we need to close the border immediately and stop spending tax dollars on their upkeep.
While deportation of illegals is fraught with the potential for chaos, legal challenges, media, and celebrity branding it as Hitlerian, and even violence, we must begin the process as soon as possible.
Make our Republic more transparent and responsive to the citizenry by shrinking the size of our Federal Government and returning decision making to State and local governments.
From an economic standpoint we need to use the political capital of this election to make the following changes:
“Drill baby drill.” One action that can have an immediate effect on both inflation and national defense.
Let the “Invisible Hand” of the market guide consumer’s purchases. Get the Federal Government out of our kitchens and garages.
Take a look at the foreign entities who own our Government bonds and enact legislation, if needed, to reduce the impact that foreign debt ownership can have on our public policy. I am concerned about CCP influence due to their ownership of U.S. debt.
Reduce regulations and barriers on small business formation and operation. A diversified small business community is the backbone of our capitalist system.
Keep taxes low and expand domestic business formation by generating Federal Government revenue with Tariff strategies.
In closing this postmortem on the 2024 election I call on both the Democrats and Republicans to not sabotage the prospects for unification and work with our President for the benefit of the American citizenry by adhering to and strengthening our Constitution and being true fiduciaries of the will of the people.
